Denmark defender who once 'neutralised' Ronaldo calls time on international career

Leicester City centre-back Jannik Vestergaard has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an 11-year Denmark career that included 59 caps and some of the biggest moments of the national team's modern era.

The 33-year-old confirmed his decision in an interview with Danish newspaper Politiken

The 33-year-old confirmed his decision in an interview with Danish newspaper Politiken, explaining that he had spent a long time reflecting on the right moment to walk away and now felt that moment had arrived.

"I have always wanted to stop at the right time. For me, now is the natural time," Vestergaard said.

His decision closes the chapter on a national team career that began in 2013 and, by his own admission, became one of the greatest honors of his life.

Denmark head coach Brian Riemer paid tribute to Vestergaard by highlighting not just his experience but also the personality and steadiness he brought to the squad over the years. Riemer described the defender as a player of strong character whose qualities on the pitch were both obvious and consistent.

Among the standout moments mentioned by the Denmark boss was Euro 2021, where the Danes reached the semi-finals in one of the most emotional and memorable runs in their history. Riemer also pointed to Denmark's Nations League win over Portugal in 2025, a match in which Vestergaard was given the task of dealing with Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to the coach, he did that job brilliantly. Riemer said Vestergaard had effectively "neutralised" Ronaldo in Denmark's 1-0 victory at Parken, a performance that stood out as one of the veteran defender's finest international displays.

Vestergaard missed Denmark's World Cup playoff matches in March after undergoing hip surgery, a setback that kept him out as the team suffered a costly defeat away to the Czech Republic. That result ended Denmark's hopes of progressing, and it appears to have helped shape the defender's final decision.

With Euro 2028 still two years away, Vestergaard told Politiken that he no longer sees himself as part of the next phase of the national team project, which is now being built around younger and newer players.

That makes his retirement feel less abrupt than strategic. Rather than hold on too long, he has chosen to step away at a point where he believes the transition should belong to the next generation.

His final months with the national side were not especially uplifting. In the autumn, he was part of the Denmark squad for disappointing World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Scotland, matches in which the team missed the chance to move much closer to the finals.

Even so, the bigger picture of his international career remains a proud one.

Vestergaard has represented Denmark with distinction for more than a decade, playing through different cycles, managers , and tournaments while establishing himself as a dependable presence in defense . Since joining Leicester in 2021, he has remained a regular figure at club level, but it is clear that his time with Denmark carries a special emotional weight.

He said that representing the national team had been the greatest honor and the most important part of his career and life since making his debut more than a decade ago. Now that chapter is over.

For Denmark, it is the end of a long-serving international career. For Vestergaard, it is the kind of farewell he wanted, on his own terms and at what he believes is the right time.
